How often should I re-tube my sunbed?
Your sunbed should be re-tubed every 500-600 hours.

Do I need additional ventilation in the room where my tanning equipment is being installed?
It depends upon the size of the room. Generally, additional ventilation is a good idea because sunbeds create a lot of hot air if in frequent use. This hot air warms up a small room or cubicle very quickly and can cause the sunbed to overheat and breakdown. The fans on a sunbed merely re-circulate existing air, they do not cool it down. Therefore, adequate air extraction is required. Ask your supplier for their recommendations.

What is The Sunbed Association?
The Sunbed Association (TSA) is a non-profit making trade association which represents manufacturers and distributors in the industry, as well as sunbed hirers and sunbed operators. It is the only national organisation which has been set up to represent the industry offering advice, training and guidance to those who need it. Members of the TSA are compliance tested to ensure that they meet and maintain the Association’s Code of Practice. Membership confers the same status as the British kitemark for quality.

How many lamps should there be in a vertical tanning unit?
There should only be 48-50 lamps in a vertical tanning unit. The diameter should be 700mm, so that there isn’t a large gap between the lamps which can lead to striping on the body. If the lamps are too far away they are ineffectual and more lamps are needed. This only increases the electricity bill not the tanning output. If the lamps are too close with fewer lamps, there is insufficient power to tan. Also, if the space is small it can cause unnecessary claustrophobia in customers.

How much does it cost to run a vertical tanning unit?

What is the difference between lease/purchase and income share?
| Lease/purchase is a scheme whereby a regular monthly amount is paid over a predetermined period (usually 3 years). At the end of this period assuming all payments have been made the ownership of the bed passes to the customer.
Income share offers the customer the chance to install tanning equipment with little or no upfront payment. When installed, the unit remains the property of the sunbed supplier and any income generated is split between the customer and the supplier.

Should a person use a sunbed when taking medicines?
Some medicines greatly increase the skin’s sensitivity to UV-radiation. They contain substances with a so-called phototoxic effect. The medication’s instructions should always be checked and if in doubt ask a doctor. Sunbed operators are not doctors or dermatologists, so the responsibility should be placed with the customer to check for themselves. Also, customers must always advise the operator if medical circumstances change.

What is the difference between UV-A and UV-B?
Ultraviolet radiation is made up from different components, including UV-A and UV-B. UV-B is a more powerful tanner than UV-A, and can cause sunburn. However, a small dose of UV-B is essential to induce the pigment forming cells to start producing melanin. UV-B also ensures a thickening of the skin providing optimum protection against the rays from the sun.
